A solid rivet looks like a smooth rod. It has a head on one end. The other end is called the tail.

To install a rivet, you put it in a hole. Then, you hit the tail to change its shape. This new shape is called a shop head.

Some rivets are special. Blind rivets, or "pop" rivets, are different. You only need to reach one side of the metal to use them.
