A rivet gun is a tool that joins metal parts.

Most guns use pneumatic power. This means they use air to work.

To use the gun, a worker holds a trigger. This lets air flow into a piston. The piston moves and hits a rivet set. This force pushes the rivet into the metal. On the other side, a bucking bar supports the rivet. The bar helps flatten the tail of the rivet. This makes the parts stay tight.

Some guns hit many times. A slow-hitting gun hits about 2,500 times every minute. A fast-hitting gun hits up to 5,000 times per minute. These are good for soft rivets.

A pop rivet gun works in a different way. It does not hammer the rivet. Instead, it forms the rivet in place. It uses a mandrel, which is a small shaft. When you squeeze the handle, the gun pulls the mandrel. This pulls a metal sleeve tight. The mandrel then breaks or "pops."
