Blacksmiths use it to hit metal work. It works by using power to lift a heavy part. This part is called a ram. The ram holds a hammer head. The ram moves up and down. It strikes the metal on an anvil.

Older tools were called trip hammers. They used gravity to fall. A power hammer is different. It uses power to speed up the ram. This makes the strike much stronger.

Some hammers use steam. These are often very large. Workers may need a crane to move big metal parts. Other hammers use mechanical parts. These use belts or motors to turn a crank. Some hammers use air. We call this pneumatics. This means using compressed air to move parts.

People have used these since the late 1880s. Many shops still use them today. Some use air power. This type became popular in the middle of the 20th century.
