These tools help people do heavy work. People use them to pound grain for food. They also crush metal ores into small pieces.

In a forge, they can shape iron into bars.

How does the hammer move? Most trip hammers use a cam. A cam is a part on a spinning shaft. The cam lifts the hammer up. Then, the hammer is released. It falls down because of gravity. This creates a strong strike. Many trip hammers use a water wheel for power. The moving water turns the wheel. This turns the shaft and moves the cam.

Trip hammers have a long history. They were used in China during the Han dynasty.

Romans also used them in mines. In medieval Europe, they were common by the 12th century. Later, new power hammers replaced them during the Industrial Revolution.
