Most hammers have a heavy head and a long handle. You swing the hammer to hit a small area. This can drive nails into wood or crush rocks.

There are even big hammers called sledgehammers.

The hammer head is often made of steel. The handle, or haft, is often made of wood. Wood helps absorb shock so your hand does not feel the hit.

Some handles are made of plastic or fiberglass.

People have used hammers for a very long time. Experts found stone tools near Kenya from 3.3 million years ago. At first, these tools did not have handles. Later, people tied stones to sticks using leather. This gave them better control. Hammers help us build, find food, and stay safe.
