It has a handle and a head. It became very useful in the late middle ages. At that time, armor became very strong. Swords and axes could not pierce the metal. The heavy hammer could still do damage. It used a big impact to hit the enemy.

Some war hammers were short. These were used by people on horses. Other hammers had long handles. These were for soldiers on foot. A long hammer could be five to six feet long. A short hammer might be only two to three feet long.

Many hammers had a spike on the back. This spike helped in many ways. It could hook a shield or a strap. Some hammers also had diamond shapes on the head. This helped the blow hit a small area. This made the strike even stronger.

In some places, these tools were symbols of rank. A leader might carry one to show his status. In Poland and Hungary, people used them for a long time. They used them until the middle of the 1700s.
