It served as a home for noble people. It was also a safe place to hide. If enemies took the castle, people ran to the keep.

In the 10th century, the first keeps were made of wood. They sat on high mounds of dirt called mottes.

These wooden towers often had many floors. They held rooms for sleeping and eating. They even had storage for food.

Later, rulers began to build keeps with stone. Stone was very strong. These keeps could be square or round. Building with stone was hard work. It required skilled workers. It also took a long time. Some stone keeps took ten years to finish.

By the 15th century, things began to change. New weapons called bombards could break stone walls. These were early types of cannons. Because of this, keeps fell out of fashion. Today, many old keeps are parts of museums. People visit them to learn about history.
