A war hammer is a heavy tool used for fighting. It has a handle and a metal head. This weapon became very important during the late medieval period. At that time, soldiers wore very strong plate armor. Swords and axes often bounced off this metal. The war hammer solved this hard job. It used a heavy impact to hurt an enemy. It did not need to pierce the metal to work.

The design of a war hammer can change a lot. Some had short handles for people on horses. These were about two to three feet long. Other hammers had very long handles for foot soldiers. These could be five to six feet long. Many hammers had a spike on the back side. This spike could hook a shield or a strap. Some heads had diamond shapes to focus the force. This helped the strike hit a very small area.

People have used hammers in war for a long time. The name comes from famous people like Judah Maccabee. He was a Jewish rebel from the 2nd century BC. The name also comes from Charles Martel in France. Full war hammers became common in the mid-14th century. By 1395, French soldiers used a type called the Picoise. This hammer had a tip and a beak. It was a direct response to better armor.

Other heavy hammers were also used in battles. A maul is a long-handled hammer with a heavy head. It might be made of wood, lead, or iron. In 1382, rebels in Paris took 3,000 mauls from an armory. These rebels were called Maillotins. At the Battle of Agincourt, English archers used lead mauls. They used them as tools and as weapons. Even Tudor archers used them as late as 1562.

In some lands, the hammer was more than a weapon. It became a symbol of rank and status. Cavalry leaders called Rottmeisters carried them to show their power. In Poland and Hungary, hammers were very special. A nobleman might carry a war hammer like a walking stick. There were different types like the Czekan and the Nadziak. These hammers stayed popular in those areas for a long time. They were used until the first half of the 18th century.
