It has a large and heavy head made of metal. This head is attached to a long wooden or solid handle. Most sledgehammers require two hands to use them safely. You must use a swinging motion with your whole body. This movement helps the heavy head pick up momentum. The momentum creates a very large force when you strike something.

This tool works differently than a small nail hammer. Small hammers concentrate force into a tiny area. A sledgehammer spreads its force over a wider area. This makes it great for breaking through drywall or masonry walls. It can also be used to fracture concrete. People also use them to dislodge objects that are trapped.

The name comes from the Old English word "slægan." This word meant to strike something violently. Sledgehammers were once very common in mining operations. Today, they are used by blacksmiths to shape heavy iron. They are also used to drive fence posts into the ground. Police forces sometimes use them to enter buildings during raids.

Some workers use special versions of this tool. Railroad workers used spike mauls to drive spikes into wooden sleepers. These spike mauls had curved heads with a small beak. The beak was only about one inch across. This shape helped the worker hit the spike accurately. In 1869, Leland Stanford used a silver hammer at Promontory, Utah. He was joining the Union Pacific railroad at that time.

You might also see smaller versions of this tool. A drilling hammer is a small sledgehammer. It has a light weight and a short handle. This design allows a person to use it with one hand. It is helpful for light demolition or masonry nails. It also works well with a steel chisel. The weight helps the chisel cut deeply into stone or metal. Scouts BSA even uses a small version called an engineer's hammer.
