Demolition is the science and engineering used to tear down buildings safely.

It is a very different task than deconstruction. Deconstruction means taking a building apart to save valuable parts for reuse. Demolition is about being efficient and fast when a structure must go.

This work is vital when old buildings need to be replaced by new ones. Engineers must plan every single step to keep people and nearby buildings safe.

There are many ways to take a structure down. For small houses, workers might use machines like excavators or bulldozers.

They might also use a wrecking ball, which is a heavy weight on a cable. For larger buildings, high-reach excavators can reach very high up.

Some workers use hydraulic shears to cut through steel and wood. To keep dust from flying everywhere, workers often use fire hoses to keep the site wet.

Before the heavy work starts, there is a lot of preparation. Workers must remove dangerous materials like asbestos first.

They also disconnect utilities like water and power. For building implosions, experts drill holes into columns to place explosives. They use materials like TNT or C4 to make the building fall. The goal is a progressive collapse where the building falls into its own footprint. This prevents damage to the streets and buildings nearby.

History shows us many different ways people have handled this job. In Great Britain, Fred Dibnah used a manual method for chimneys. He would cut a hole at the base and use wooden props.

He would then burn the props so the chimney fell. In New York City, a massive building at 270 Park Avenue was built in 1960. It was torn down between 2019 and 2021 to make room for a new structure.

Demolition connects to how we manage our world and our waste. A "green" approach called deconstruction helps keep trash out of landfills.

Some projects can save over 90% of a building's materials for reuse. Concrete can be crushed to make new paths or road bases. Timber can be shredded to make boards like MDF. In real estate, some people call tearing down a house a "teardown."
