In the past, people wore mail. Mail is made of many small metal rings. It was easy to move in.

Later, metal plates began to replace mail. By the year 1420, full suits of plate armour were ready. These suits covered a person from neck to toe.

Making a full suit was very hard. Armourers made the plates move with the body. This helped the wearer run and jump. High quality suits cost a lot of money. Only rich people could buy them. Many soldiers wore cheaper, ready-made pieces.

In Japan, warriors also used plate armour. Some suits were even made to stop bullets.

Eventually, guns changed how people fought. Bullets could go through the metal plates. Because of this, people wore less armour. Most soldiers began to wear only a breastplate. A breastplate is a single piece of metal for the chest.
