A power hammer is a mechanical forging tool used to shape metal.

These machines are also known as open die power forging hammers. They have been used by blacksmiths and metalworkers since the late 1880s. These tools helped replace older machines called trip hammers. Today, they remain essential for manufacturers and artist-blacksmiths alike. They allow workers to manipulate metal with great precision and force.

The mechanism of a power hammer relies on a reciprocating ram. This ram moves up and down within a sturdy frame. The ram holds either a hammer head or a die. The workpiece is placed on a lower anvil or die.

When the machine operates, the upper head strikes the metal. Unlike older trip hammers, a power hammer does not rely only on gravity. It uses a power source to accelerate the ram downward. This acceleration creates much more force than a simple falling weight. The machine stores potential energy in several different ways.

There are three main ways a power hammer stores this energy. Some machines use mechanical linkages and springs to drive the ram. Others use compressed air or steam to create movement.

This energy is released during the downward stroke. This specific process ensures the strike is powerful enough for heavy forging. The design of the hammer depends heavily on the power source being used. Each type of energy dictates how the machine is built and operated.

Power hammers are generally categorized by their specific power source. Steam hammers are one major type. These use the great energy of steam to drive the hammer head. Because steam provides so much power, these tend to be the largest models. They were often used in locomotive works to shape massive pieces. In those settings, workers used overhead cranes and several men to position the metal.

These massive machines could reach a rating of 250,000 pounds.

Mechanical power hammers are another common category. These machines are generally smaller than steam models. A single person can often operate one while holding the workpiece. Many of these machines use mechanical linkage systems. They were often powered by line shaft flat belt systems. Later, electric motors became common for this purpose. The motor rotates a crank, which then drives the reciprocating ram.

Air-power hammers use pneumatics to drive the hammer head. Pneumatics is a system that uses compressed air to create motion. This type of hammer became more popular in the middle of the 20th century. Today, several manufacturers still produce hammers driven by compressed air. These machines offer a different way to manage the force and speed of the strikes. They represent the modern evolution of forging technology.

We measure the capability of a power hammer by its rating. This rating is based on the weight of the moving parts. These parts must act directly on the workpiece to be counted. This includes the weight of the upper die and the ram. It also includes the weight of mechanical linkage arms or springs. In air hammers, the weight of the piston and connecting rods is included.

This total weight determines the force the hammer can apply.

The history of the power hammer shows a shift in manufacturing. At the end of the 19th century, mechanical hammers became popular in small shops. These machines were typically rated between 50 and 500 pounds of falling weight. They allowed small repair shops to perform much more complex work. As technology changed, the industry moved from steam to mechanical and then to air power. This progression has allowed metalworking to scale from massive locomotive parts to small, artistic creations.
