Metalworking

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Metalworking is the technical process of shaping and reshaping metals. This work allows humans to create useful objects, complex assemblies, and massive structures. The scale of metalworking is incredibly diverse. It ranges from the construction of huge ships and bridges to the creation of delicate jewelry. It also includes the production of precise engine parts. Because it involves both physical skill and scientific principles, metalworking is considered both a craft and a science.

Modern metalworking is organized into three broad categories. These are forming, casting, and cutting. Casting involves pouring molten metal into a mold to achieve a specific shape. This process uses no mechanical force, relying instead on the metal cooling within the mold.

Forming processes modify a workpiece by deforming it without removing any material. This is often done using mechanical force and heat. For example, bulk forming uses heat or pressure to make metal easier to shape. Sheet forming involves applying force at room temperature to bend or stamp thin metal.

Cutting processes involve removing material to reach a final shape. This is often done using high-speed steel or carbide tools.

Before any major work begins, a metalworker must perform layout, or marking out. This is the process of transferring a design or pattern onto the workpiece. To ensure accuracy, workers use specialized tools like calipers. Calipers are hand tools used to measure the distance between two points very precisely. Some calipers can be accurate to within one-thousandth of an inch.

For larger objects where extreme precision is less critical, a tape measure might be used instead.

The history of metalworking spans many millennia and cultures. The oldest evidence of copper working is a pendant found in northern Iraq, dating to 8,700 BCE. In the Americas, copper was processed near Lake Michigan between 4000 and 5000 BCE. The oldest gold artifacts in the world were discovered in the Bulgarian Varna Necropolis and date to 4450 BCE. Around 6000 BCE, copper smelting became common in Southwestern Asia. Smelting is the process of using heat to liberate metal from ore. Ore is a mineral-bearing rock that contains metal.

Ancient civilizations recognized seven specific metals. These were iron, tin, lead, copper, mercury, silver, and gold. Scientists use oxidation potential to understand how these metals behave. Oxidation potential is an indicator of how tightly a metal is bound to its ore. Iron has a high oxidation potential of +0.44 V. In contrast, gold has a very low potential of -1.50 V. This low value is why gold is often found in nature as pure, workable nuggets.

Early metalworkers discovered that different metals had different strengths. Copper was abundant and could be smelted, but it was too soft for many tools. To solve this, people created bronze, which is an alloy of copper and tin. An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals. Bronze provided the stiffness and edge-durability that pure copper lacked. This advancement was vital until the emergence of the Iron Age. Different regions discovered these materials at different times. For example, people in China and Great Britain moved to bronze quickly. In the Americas, metals were primarily used for art and jewelry until European colonization.

Today, most large-scale metalworking occurs in specialized environments called machine shops. These shops contain various machine tools capable of creating highly precise products. While some traditional techniques like blacksmithing are still used for hobbies or art, they are not economically competitive for large industries. Modern metalworking is essential to global infrastructure. It supports the extraction of precious metals for electronics and the construction of transport systems. Without these processes, the global movement of goods and services would cease to function on its current scale.
