It fills the space between two parts. This helps stop leaks when parts are joined together.

Most gaskets are made from flat sheets. These sheets can be made of many things. They use rubber, metal, cork, or plastic. Some gaskets use PTFE. This is a type of soft plastic often called Teflon.

Gaskets work by being squeezed. This squeeze is called compression. When you tighten bolts, the gasket squishes into tiny gaps. This helps it fill any uneven spots on the machine parts. A stronger squeeze can often make a gasket last longer.

Some gaskets are more complex. Spiral-wound gaskets use a mix of metal and filler material. They wrap metal and soft filler in a circle. The filler helps the seal, while the metal provides support.

Other gaskets use solid metal rings. These are used for very high pressure. In the past, some gaskets used asbestos. People do not use it much now because it can be unsafe to touch.
