Gasket

A gasket is a mechanical seal used to join two or more surfaces together.

Its main job is to prevent leaks from going in or out of a machine. When parts are joined, they might not be perfectly flat. Gaskets are made of materials that can change shape slightly. This allows them to fill in tiny gaps or uneven spots.

By filling these spaces, the gasket creates a tight seal. Choosing the right material is a very important task for safety. If a gasket fails, it can cause big problems or high costs.

Most gaskets work through a process called compression. This happens when parts are squeezed together, often by using bolts.

The material must be yielding, which means it can deform or squish under pressure. As the parts tighten, the gasket fills the space between them. This helps it stay tight even under different working conditions. Some gaskets even need a special liquid sealant added to their surface. For metal gaskets, the metal itself acts like a spring to maintain the seal. A higher compressive load often helps a gasket last much longer.

Engineers have created many different types of gaskets over time. In 1912, a company called Flexitallic invented the spiral-wound gasket.

These gaskets use a mix of metal and a soft filler material. The metal provides a strong structure, while the filler creates the actual seal. In the past, some gaskets were made using a material called asbestos. This was used for high-pressure steam systems. Today, people use non-asbestos materials because asbestos can be a health hazard. Modern designs like fishbone gaskets are made using CNC machines to improve on older styles.

There are many specific materials used to make these seals. Common sheet materials include rubber, cork, felt, and silicone. Some gaskets use PTFE, which is a type of plastic also known as Teflon.

Industrial gaskets often face huge pressures, sometimes reaching 14 MPa or 2000 psi. Other gaskets are made of solid metal, like copper, for vacuum systems. Metal gaskets must be softer than the parts they are sealing. This ensures the machine parts do not warp or bend. Different materials are chosen based on whether they will touch acids or steam.

You can think of a gasket like a soft cushion between two hard blocks. If you press the blocks together, the cushion squishes into every tiny crack. This keeps air or liquid from escaping through the sides.

Many machines in your world rely on this idea to work safely. Without these seals, pipes would leak and engines would not stay pressurized. Whether it is a small plastic seal or a heavy metal ring, gaskets are essential. They keep the things inside machines exactly where they belong.
