Bicycles use gears to change how you ride.

Gears help you pick the best way to pedal. This is called your cadence. Cadence is the rate at which you pedal.

Most bikes have many gears. You can use a low gear to go uphill. In a low gear, you pedal fast. It feels easy on your legs. You can use a high gear to go fast on flat roads. In a high gear, you pedal slower. You must push much harder.

Some bikes only have one gear. These are called single-speed bicycles.

They do not have a way to change gears.

People use different ways to measure gears. One way is gear inches. This uses the size of the wheel. Another way is metres of development. This is the distance the bike moves in one pedal turn. You can also count the teeth on the gears. These parts are called sprockets. The front part is the chainring. The rear part is the sprocket. Using the right gears helps your knees stay safe. It also helps you ride more easily.
