Bowden cable

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A Bowden cable is a clever tool used to move parts. It works by sending mechanical force from one place to another. This happens through an inner cable that slides inside a hollow outer housing.

The housing is very strong and has a special build. It has an inner lining to help things slide. It also has a layer of steel wire to keep it from squishing. A protective outer covering keeps the whole thing safe from the world.

How does the cable actually work? The inner cable moves back and forth inside the tube. This movement can pull a part or even push it.

Some cables use a single solid wire for pushing. Other cables use many tiny wires twisted together to stay flexible. You can even adjust how tight the cable feels. A small, hollow bolt called a barrel adjuster does this job. Turning the bolt changes the length of the housing to tighten or loosen the cable.

There is a long history behind this invention. Many people thought Sir Frank Bowden invented it around 1902. However, the real inventor was an Irishman named Ernest Monnington Bowden. He lived at 35 Bedford Place in London. He was granted the first patent in 1896.

Another engineer named George Frederick Larkin also worked with these cables. He patented a flexible cable brake for cycles in 1902. Larkin later became a manager for the Bowden company.

There are many specific facts about these parts. Early cables used round steel wire for the outer tube. Modern versions often use square section wire instead. Some special housings are made of aluminum or carbon fiber. These newer materials are lighter and can make tighter curves.

The ends of the cable often have metal pieces called nipples. These nipples fit into levers or brakes to hold them in place. Some nipples are shaped like a pear, while others are cylindrical.

You can see Bowden cables working in many things you know. They are used for brakes and gear changes on bicycles. They also help control the throttle in motorcycles and cars.

Even light aircraft use them to control their engines. In the past, they were even used to operate guns on planes. This flexible design makes it easy to move parts around corners. It is a simple way to connect two different parts.
