technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A Bowden cable is a flexible tool. It helps move parts by using an inner cable. This inner cable moves inside a hollow outer tube. We call this outer tube a housing.

The housing has several parts. It has a soft lining on the inside. This helps the inner cable slide easily. It also has a layer of steel wire. This layer keeps the tube from squishing. Finally, a plastic cover protects the outside.

You can use these cables to pull or push. Some use a single solid wire. Others use many small wires twisted together. This makes them very flexible.

You can also change how tight the cable is. This is done with a barrel adjuster. It is a small, hollow bolt. Turning the bolt makes the housing longer or shorter. This makes the cable tight or loose.

Ernest Monnington Bowden invented this mechanism. He was granted a patent in 1896. These cables are used in many things. They work in bicycles, motorcycles, and even planes.
