A tappet is a part used in many machines.

Most people find them in car engines. Their main job is to change motion. An engine has a part called a camshaft. This part spins in a circle. The tappet takes that spinning motion and turns it into up and down motion. This helps open and close valves.

There are different kinds of tappets. Some are called hydraulic tappets.

These use engine oil to work. The oil fills a tiny piston inside. This helps the part adjust itself so it stays in the right place. Other engines use roller tappets. These have a small wheel on them. The wheel helps the part spin easily. This stops the parts from wearing out too fast.

Tappets are also used in other ways. In a weaving loom, they help make patterns in cloth. They can even be used in tools like jackhammers. In those tools, the tappet moves an air valve. This keeps the tool working.
