Tappet

A tappet is a small but vital part found in many machines.

Its main job is to change the way something moves. In a car engine, a part called a camshaft spins in a circle. The tappet takes that spinning motion and turns it into up and down motion. This movement is needed to open and close intake and exhaust valves. Without this change in motion, the engine could not breathe or run.

There are several ways a tappet can work. Some are called hydraulic tappets, or hydraulic valve lifters.

These contain a tiny piston filled with pressurized engine oil. This oil acts like a spring to adjust the gap automatically. This means the engine does not need manual adjustments to keep parts working well. Other engines use roller tappets, which have a small wheel on them. These wheels help reduce friction and drag, making the engine more efficient.

We can trace the history of the tappet back many years. The first recorded use of the term was in 1715. It was part of the valve gear in the Newcomen engine. This was an early kind of steam engine. Before this, valves had to be moved by hand. By 1715, the tappet helped automate this repetitive task. This allowed the engine to work more easily. This type of work continued even into the early twentieth century.

Engine designs have changed how tappets are used over time. In an old sidevalve engine, the tappets sat near the valves.

In a pushrod engine, the tappets sit lower in the engine block. They push a long rod up to the valves. Some modern engines use a double overhead camshaft, or DOHC design.

These often use a simple "bucket tappet" to move the valves directly. This design was first used for high-performance aircraft and racing engines.

Tappets are not just for cars and planes. They are also found in weaving looms. In a loom, a tappet helps create patterns in cloth. These patterns can include denim or satin weaves. You can even find them in tools like pneumatic rock drills.

In these tools, the tappet moves an air valve to keep the hammer working. It is amazing how one small part can help so many different things work.
