Rack and pinion

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A rack and pinion is a way to move things. It uses two main parts. One part is a round gear called a pinion. The other part is a straight gear called a rack.

These parts work together to change motion. When the pinion turns, it pushes the rack in a line. This is called linear motion. It can also work the other way. Moving the rack in a line will make the pinion turn.

We see this tool in many places. It helps cars turn their wheels. It helps trains go up steep hills on rack railways. It also works in stairlifts and electric gates.

A single pinion can move two racks at once. These racks will move in opposite directions. They will move the exact same distance.

One pinion can also have straight teeth. It can also have helical teeth. These are teeth that are curved or slanted. This helps the parts work together smoothly.
