A ratchet is a tool that helps things move one way.

It stops things from moving backward. This works in many machines and tools.

A ratchet has two main parts. One part is a gear with teeth. This gear can be round or a straight line called a rack.

The second part is a finger called a pawl. The pawl is often held by a spring.

The teeth on a gear are not the same on both sides. One side has a gentle slope. The other side has a steep slope. When the gear moves forward, the pawl slides over the gentle slope. This often makes a clicking sound.

If the gear tries to move backward, the pawl hits the steep slope. This locks the gear in place. It cannot move back. Sometimes a small amount of backward motion happens. This is called backlash. It is the space between the teeth. Some ratchets use rubber to stop this. This helps them stay very still. You can find ratchets in seatbelts and clocks. They are also in socket wrenches and cable ties.
