A torque wrench is a special tool.

It helps tighten nuts and bolts to a set tightness. This tightness is called torque. Using the right torque is very important. It keeps parts from being too loose or too tight.

There are many ways these tools work. One type is called a beam wrench. It has two metal bars. One bar is the handle. The other bar is an indicator. When you pull the handle, the first bar bends. The second bar stays straight. This shows you the torque on a scale.

Other tools use a click. A click torque wrench has a part inside called a clutch. It uses a small ball and a spring. When you reach the right tightness, the ball clicks out of its place. This makes a sound. You can also feel it in your hand.

Some tools even use batteries. These electronic tools can show the torque on a screen.

People have made these tools for a long time. John H. Sharp filed a patent in 1931. Later, Conrad Bahr and George Pfefferle made a tool that clicks. This helped people fix things more easily.
