A piston is a part that moves up and down.

It sits inside a tube. Small rings help it fit tight. These rings keep the air from leaking out.

In a car engine, the piston moves because of gas. The gas pushes the piston down. This push turns the engine parts.

Some pistons are made of light metal. This helps the engine go fast.

Other pistons are very long. They help the engine stay steady.

Some pistons also help move liquids. This is how a pump works.

It is amazing how these parts work together!
