He lived a long and busy life. He studied math, physics, and engineering. He also worked as a leader for his city, Magdeburg. During a big war, his home was badly hurt. Many buildings burned down. Otto helped to rebuild his city.

Otto was very curious about space. He wanted to know if a vacuum could exist. A vacuum is a space with no air in it. He first tried to make one using water. He used a pump to pull water out of wooden barrels. But the wood had tiny holes. Air leaked back into the barrels. This ruined his work. In 1647, he began pumping air instead. He built a new tool called an air pump.

Otto showed his work to many important people. He used his tools to impress kings. One famous test used two metal hemispheres. These are half-sphere shapes. He joined them together and pumped the air out. Then, he used horses to pull them apart. The horses could not do it! The air pressure held the metal parts tightly together. This showed how much air pushes on things. His work helped start a new age of science.
