A vacuum is space with almost no matter. Matter is the stuff that makes up everything.

The word comes from a Latin word meaning "empty."

Most vacuums are not perfect. We call these partial vacuums. This means the air pressure is just very low. A vacuum cleaner is a simple example. It reduces air pressure by about 20 percent.

Scientists use high-quality vacuums in labs. They can reach a pressure near zero. Outer space is an even better vacuum. It has very few atoms in it.

People have argued about vacuums for a long time. Ancient Greek thinkers wondered if they could exist. Aristotle thought nature would always fill empty space. Later, Evangelista Torricelli made a vacuum in a lab. He used a tall glass tube and mercury.

In 1654, Otto von Guericke made a vacuum pump. He showed that air pressure can be very strong. He used two metal halves called hemispheres. Teams of horses could not pull them apart. This happened because of the air pressure outside.
