A vacuum is a space that has no matter in it. The word comes from a Latin term meaning "empty" or "void."

In science, we often talk about a perfect vacuum, which is also called free space. Most things we see are actually partial vacuums. A partial vacuum is a space where the gas pressure is much lower than the air pressure around us. For example, a vacuum cleaner reduces air pressure by about 20 percent.

Even higher-quality vacuums exist in science labs. These ultra-high vacuum chambers can reach pressures below one trillionth of our atmospheric pressure.

How does a vacuum work in a lab? Scientists use special tools to remove air from a container. One way to make a partial vacuum is using a pump.

Another way is by using liquid metal like mercury. In 1643, Evangelista Torricelli showed how to do this with a tall glass tube. He filled the tube with mercury and turned it upside down into a bowl. This created a Torricellian vacuum inside the tube.

By removing the air, the pressure inside becomes much lower than the pressure outside. This difference in pressure is what creates suction.

People have debated if a vacuum can even exist for a very long time. Ancient Greek philosophers had many different ideas about this. Aristotle believed that a void could never happen in nature. He thought that surrounding material would always rush in to fill any empty space.

Later, in the 13th century, the Arab engineer Al-Jazari described a suction pump. By the 17th century, people began to study vacuums using real experiments. This helped move the idea from a philosophical debate to a scientific study.

History shows many amazing inventions used to study empty space. In 1654, Otto von Guericke invented the first vacuum pump.

He performed a famous test with two metal hemispheres. He sucked the air out from between them. Then, he tried to pull them apart using teams of horses. The horses could not do it because the outside air pressure held them together!

Later, in 1855, Heinrich Geissler made a mercury pump. This allowed scientists to see new electrical properties in a vacuum.

We can see the effects of vacuums in our daily lives and in space. Vacuum technology helped us create the incandescent light bulbs we use at home.

It is also very important for human spaceflight. Scientists study how a vacuum affects living things and human health. Outer space is the largest vacuum we know. In intergalactic space, there are only a few hydrogen atoms in every cubic meter.

This shows that even the biggest empty spaces are still part of our amazing universe.
