Outer space is the vast expanse beyond Earth's atmosphere. It exists between all the celestial bodies in the universe.

Space is almost a perfect vacuum. This means it has very low levels of particle density. It is mostly made of hydrogen and helium plasma.

Most of the universe is made of this empty space. Even star systems and galaxies are mostly empty. Much of the rest of the universe is made of dark matter and dark energy. We do not yet know exactly what these are.

Space works as a place with almost no friction. This allows planets and moons to move freely in their orbits.

Light can travel very long distances through this empty area. A single photon can travel for 10 billion light years. This happens because there is very little to scatter the light.

However, dust and gas can still absorb some light. This is called extinction. Most of the matter in the universe is found in galaxies. The space between these galaxies is very empty. It has less than one hydrogen atom per cubic metre.

Humans have studied the nature of space for a long time. In the 17th century, scientists found that air pressure drops as you go higher. This helped them realize the space between Earth and the Moon must be a vacuum.

The term "outer space" was used by Alexander von Humboldt in 1845. Later, H. G. Wells helped make the term popular. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to reach Earth orbit.

Since then, uncrewed spacecraft have visited every planet in our solar system.

There are many important facts about the boundary of space. Many people use the Kármán line to mark the start of space. This line is 100 kilometers above sea level.

There is also a treaty called the Outer Space Treaty. It entered into force on 10 October 1967. This treaty says no country can claim ownership of space. It also allows all states to explore it freely.

Space is also filled with cosmic rays. These are energetic particles that can damage electronics.

Exploring space is a very hard job for humans. The vacuum and radiation are dangerous.

There is also microgravity, which means very little gravity. This can cause humans to lose bone and muscle.

Even so, some life can survive in space for a while. Lichen survived for ten days in 2007. Some seeds even grew after being in space for 1.5 years. Space is a place of both great danger and great discovery.
