The sky is the view we see when we look upward from the ground. It includes our atmosphere and the vastness of outer space.

Astronomers often call the sky the celestial sphere. This is an imaginary, round shape around the Earth. It makes the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars appear to drift across it. People divide this sphere into special areas called constellations.

To some, the sky is just the lower, thick layers of air. To others, it is a place where birds, insects, and planes fly.

Why does the sky change color? During the day, the sky looks blue because of Rayleigh scattering. This is a way light interacts with tiny air molecules. These molecules scatter blue light much more than red light.

When the Sun is low during sunrise or sunset, light travels a much longer path through the air. This long path scatters the light so much that the sky can turn red, orange, or purple. Clouds can also change the view. Water droplets in clouds can scatter light to make them look white.

The word sky comes from an old language called Old Norse. It meant "cloud" or "abode of God."

In Old English, people used the word "heaven" to describe the expanse above the Earth. Over time, the meaning of "heaven" shifted toward its religious use. Even today, the sky shows us many natural wonders. We can see rainbows, lightning, and even aurorae. These events happen because of how light and weather work together in our atmosphere.

There are many specific stages of light called twilight. Twilight happens between sunset and night, or between night and sunrise.

Scientists divide this into three parts based on how deep the Sun is below the horizon. First is civil twilight, when the Sun is within 6 degrees of the horizon. Next is nautical twilight, when it is between 6 and 12 degrees deep. Finally, astronomical twilight occurs when the Sun is between 12 and 18 degrees below the horizon.

After 18 degrees, the sky reaches its darkest point.

People have always used the sky to understand their world. In the past, farmers watched the night sky to know when to plant crops.

Today, we use the sky to predict the weather. For example, thick clouds might mean rain is coming soon. We also watch the sky for tropical cyclones. Within 36 hours of a cyclone passing, white clouds called cirrus clouds appear.

We must also be careful of light pollution. This is extra light from cities that makes it hard to see the stars clearly.
