West is one of the four main directions on a compass.

It sits directly opposite to the east. If you look at a map with north at the top, west is on the left side. You can find it by watching the sky in the evening. The sun sets in the west every single day. This direction is very important for travelers and sailors. It helps them know exactly which way they are going.

Finding west is easy if you know how the Earth works. Our planet spins on its axis in a specific way. This spin makes the sun look like it moves toward the west. On a compass, you can set a bearing of 270 degrees to go west. This works well when magnetic north and true north are in the same place. Some places have winds that blow from this direction. In middle latitudes, these are called the westerlies.

Words for west come from very old languages. The word itself comes from a Germanic root. This root relates to the idea of evening or night. In French, the word is ouest. In Spanish and Portuguese, people say oeste. Even the Latin word occidens means west. It comes from a word that means to go down or to set. These old names all point back to the setting sun.

Other planets might show us a different view. Venus is a very strange place in our solar system. It rotates in the opposite direction from the Earth. This is called retrograde rotation. If you could see through the thick clouds of Venus, you would see something odd. On Venus, the sun would rise in the west. It would set in the east instead.

Many cultures have given the west special meanings. The ancient Aztecs saw it as a home for a goddess. Ancient Egyptians thought it was a portal to the netherworld. In Chinese Buddhism, moving west can mean moving toward enlightenment. Some people use the phrase "the West" to talk about groups of countries. This can include the United Kingdom, the Americas, and Australia. It can also refer to the European Union or Israel.
