Cardinal direction

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Directions help us understand where things are located in our world. The four main points are called cardinal directions. These are North, East, South, and West.

We can find more points between these main ones. These are called intercardinal directions, like Northeast or Southwest. There are even more points called secondary intercardinal directions. If you keep adding these points, you can have 16 or even 32 named points on a compass rose. These points are all evenly spaced around a circle.

To find these directions exactly, people use math and degrees. This is called an azimuth. An azimuth is the angle of rotation measured in degrees on a flat plane.

This step is very important for navigation. It is also used by GPS receivers to find your place on Earth. For example, North is at 0 or 360 degrees. East is at 90 degrees, South is at 180 degrees, and West is at 270 degrees. Using these numbers helps people travel accurately.

Long ago, the names for these directions came from the Germanic languages. During the Migration Period, these names moved into Romance languages. They replaced the old Latin names for the directions. For instance, the Germanic names replaced the Latin words for North and South. The word for East comes from a word meaning dawn. The word for West comes from a word meaning evening. Even the word North comes from an old word meaning "left" or "below" the rising sun.

Many different cultures around the world use colors to represent directions. In China, North is linked to black and the color of water. East is linked to green or blue and the color of wood. South is linked to red and the color of fire. West is linked to white and the color of metal. Many of these cultures also include a center point. This creates a system with five directions instead of just four. In India, some traditions name ten different directions, including up and down.

Directions are also used by scientists looking at the stars. Astronomers use cardinal points to describe parts of an object in the sky. They find the North and South points by looking at the celestial poles. These points sit on the edge, or the limb, of the object. The East and West points are at right angles to them. Interestingly, the order of these points in space is different from a map. This is because astronomers are looking up at the sky instead of down at the ground.
