A compass rose is a special diagram used to show direction.

It displays the cardinal directions, which are north, east, south, and west. It also shows the points that sit between those main directions. You can find these roses on compasses and many types of maps. They are also used in modern navigation tools like GPS devices.

These diagrams help people understand exactly where they are going.

Most human groups use four main points for direction. People often name these directions based on things they see around them. For example, some might say "towards the sea" or "towards the hills." Others use the sun or the wind to name directions. Many mobile groups use the sunrise for east and sunset for west. They might also use the direction of winds to name north and south.

History shows that different cultures had many ways to map directions. The ancient Greeks used both winds and stars to find their way. Aristotle identified ten different winds in his studies. Later, Timosthenes of Rhodes added winds to make a 12-wind rose. Eratosthenes changed this to an eight-wind rose.

The Romans used the 12-wind system but gave them Latin names. Even King Charlemagne had his own names for the 12 winds.

Some sailors used the stars instead of the wind. This is called a sidereal compass rose. Arab navigators used a 32-point star rose in the Indian Ocean. They used the Pole Star to find north in the northern sky.

In the southern sky, they used the Southern Cross. They chose thirty other points based on where fifteen bright stars rose and set. This helped them navigate long distances across the ocean.

On old maps, compass roses were often very beautiful.

Some maps used a Christian cross to point toward Jerusalem. Others used a stylized star or a fleur-de-lis to mark north. Today, a compass rose often has two rings. The outer ring shows true north, which is the geographic North Pole. The inner ring shows magnetic north, which is where a compass needle points.
