The Arctic Circle is a special line on our planet.

It marks the boundary for the Arctic lands and waters. This line sits at about 66 degrees and 34 minutes north. It is the northernmost of the five major circles of latitude. The Arctic Circle is one of the two polar circles. Its partner on the other side of the world is the Antarctic Circle.

The circle passes through the Arctic Ocean and Greenland. It also crosses parts of North America, Asia, and the Scandinavian Peninsula.

This line changes how we see the sun. The position of the circle depends on the tilt of the Earth. Because of this tilt, the sun acts differently in the north. During the summer solstice in June, the sun does not set. People call this the midnight sun.

During the winter solstice in December, the sun does not rise. This period is called the polar night. The closer you go to the North Pole, the longer these events last. In the city of Murmansk, the sun stays below the horizon for 20 days before and after the winter solstice.

The word Arctic comes from a Greek word. It means "near the Bear, northern." This is because of the bear constellation in the northern sky. The circle is not in the exact same spot every year. The Earth's tilt changes slightly over 41,000 years. This happens because of the pull from the Moon's orbit. Right now, the Arctic Circle is drifting toward the North Pole. This is happening at a speed of about 15 meters every year.

Many people live north of this line. Eight different countries have land inside the Arctic Circle. These are Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States.

In the United States, Utqiagvik, Alaska is the largest settlement. In Canada, the largest community is Inuvik.

The weather in the Arctic can be very extreme. Most places are quite cold. However, the coast of Norway stays mild because of the Gulf Stream. This warm ocean current keeps northern ports ice-free all year. In the deep interior, summers can be warm. But the winters are extremely cold.
