Many people live north of this line. Eight different countries have land inside the Arctic Circle. These are Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. 
The weather in the Arctic can be very extreme. Most places are quite cold. However, the coast of Norway stays mild because of the Gulf Stream. This warm ocean current keeps northern ports ice-free all year. In the deep interior, summers can be warm. But the winters are extremely cold.

At sea level, this can happen about 50 minutes of arc south of the line. The same effect can make the Sun visible up to 50 minutes of arc north of the line during winter. These limits change if you are at a higher elevation. In mountainous regions, the view of the true horizon is often blocked.
The position of the Arctic Circle is not permanent. It changes slightly every year due to the Earth's axial tilt. This tilt fluctuates by about 2 degrees over a 41,000-year period. These changes are caused by tidal forces from the Moon's orbit. Currently, the Arctic Circle is drifting toward the North Pole. It moves at a speed of about 15 meters per year. During this same period, the Antarctic Circle is drifting toward the South Pole. The word "arctic" comes from the Greek word "arktikos." Instead, sovereignty is managed through specific maritime zones. The "Arctic Five" nations include Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia, and the United States. These countries maintain specific rights over their continental shelves. Visitors can find many landmarks throughout the region, such as signs in Auyuittuq National Park.
