A vacuum tube is a tool that controls electric current.

It is a glass or metal case with no air inside. This empty space is called a vacuum. Inside the tube are parts called electrodes.

One part is a hot cathode. When the cathode gets hot, it lets out tiny bits called electrons. This is called thermionic emission. Another part is the anode. The anode pulls the electrons toward it.

Some tubes have only two electrodes. These are called diodes. They let electricity flow in only one direction. This helps turn one kind of power into another. Other tubes have extra parts called grids.

A tube with one grid is a triode. The grid helps control the flow of electrons. This allows the tube to make signals much stronger. This is called amplification.

Vacuum tubes were very important for many years. They helped make radios, TVs, and early computers work. Today, we mostly use smaller parts called transistors. However, some tubes are still used. They are used in microwave ovens and for electric guitars.
