Neon lights are bright, glowing glass tubes.

These tubes are sealed at both ends. They hold a gas at very low pressure. Inside, there are metal parts called electrodes. When high voltage, or strong electricity, hits the electrodes, it changes the gas. This makes the gas emit light.

The color of the light depends on the gas used. Neon is a noble gas that gives off orange light. Other gases make different colors. Hydrogen makes purple-red light. Helium makes yellow or pink light. Mercury can make blue light.

People use these tubes to make neon signs. These signs can be bent into letters or pictures. They were very popular for ads from the 1920s to the 1960s. In the US, many cities were bright with these signs. One famous place was Times Square in New York.
