A plunger is a tool used to move fluids.

It works by using pressure to push or pull liquids. In your home, people use them to clear drains. These tools help fix blockages in pipes. They can also be parts of other machines. For example, a syringe uses a plunger to move medicine. Musicians even use a tool called a plunger. They use it to mute instruments like the trumpet.

Plumbing plungers work in a very specific way. First, you push the rubber cup against a drain. You might press hard to force air into the pipe. You can also push until the rubber cup flattens. Next, you pull the cup back up quickly. This action creates a vacuum. A vacuum is a strong pull that moves upward. This pull dislodges waste or other clog material.

Learning about the history of this tool is interesting. A man named John Hawley invented the plumbing plunger. He was a confectioner from New York. He created his invention in the year 1874. In his patent, he called it a "vent-clearer." People also marketed it as a "force cup." In 1876, a flattened rim was added to the design. This helped make the tool even better.

Different plungers have different shapes for different jobs. A kitchen plunger looks like a rubber ball cut in half. It has a flared edge around the side. A toilet plunger looks more like a distorted bowl. One side is tapered and the bottom has a large opening. Some plungers use a bellows-like design made of plastic. These tools work best when there is water in the pipe. This is because water does not compress like air does.

Plungers are used in many parts of daily life. You might see a plunger in a medical syringe. In a syringe, the plunger moves in a straight line. It moves inside an outer tube called a barrel. The plunger helps the syringe take in or push out fluid. Many disposable syringes use a plastic plunger. These have a rubber tip to make a tight seal. This seal stays between the plunger and the barrel.
