Joseph Black was a famous Scottish scientist who changed how we understand the world. He studied both chemistry and medicine during his life. He was a very important teacher at two big schools. First, he was a professor at the University of Glasgow for ten years. Later, he taught at the University of Edinburgh for more than 30 years. His lessons were so exciting that many people went to see them for fun.

Black discovered many important things through careful experiments. He found a gas that he called "fixed air," which we now know as carbon dioxide. He noticed this gas was denser, or heavier, than regular air. He also saw that it could not support a flame or animal life. To help with his work, he built a tool called an analytical balance. This was a very precise scale with a light beam and a wedge.

One of his biggest discoveries was about how heat works. He studied something called latent heat, which is heat that stays hidden. He saw that when you add heat to ice, the temperature does not go up right away. Instead, the heat works to turn the ice into water. He also saw this happen when boiling water turns into steam. This idea was a huge step for the science of heat.

Black was born in Bordeaux, France, in 1728. He was the sixth child in a large family of 12 children. He went to the University of Glasgow when he was 18 years old. Later, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He was even the principal physician for King George III in Scotland. He died in 1799 at the age of 71.

His work helps us understand many things we see every day. His ideas about heat helped people make better steam engines. He also helped his friend James Watt with research on steam power. Even today, buildings at his old universities are named after him. We can still see his impact in how we study chemistry. His life shows how curious questions can lead to great discoveries.
