He was known by many names, like "the Old Fox." People also called him "the Clutch Hand." This was because his right hand only had one finger. It looked a bit like a claw. He was the first boss of the Morello crime family. This group eventually became the Genovese crime family. It is now the oldest of the Five Families in New York City.

Morello's life began in Corleone, Sicily, on May 2, 1867. His father, Calogero, died when Giuseppe was young. His mother, Angelina, later married Bernardo Terranova. Bernardo was part of a local group called a cosca. This is another name for a Mafia clan. Giuseppe grew up with his half-brothers and sisters. His uncle, Giuseppe Battaglia, was also a leader in a local clan. These connections may have helped him early in life.

Morello moved to the United States around 1892. He had been a suspect in a crime in Sicily. The Italian government even found him guilty of making fake money. He moved to New York with his large family in 1893. At first, he tried many different jobs. He worked in Louisiana and farmed cotton in Texas. He even tried to run a saloon and a date factory. These businesses did not work out well for him.

By 1902, Morello owned a saloon on Prince Street in Manhattan.

This shop became a place for his gang to meet. He started a group called the 107th Street Mob. This group grew into a huge empire. They made money through robbery and making fake money. They also took small amounts of money from business owners for "protection." They used real stores to hide their illegal money. This was a new way to manage their wealth.

Morello was a very important leader in the underworld. In 1905, other leaders called him the "boss of bosses." He spent many years in prison for his crimes. He was even sent to Atlanta Federal Penitentiary in 1910. After he was released, he became an adviser to Joe Masseria. He helped Masseria during a conflict called the Castellammarese War. Sadly, Morello was killed in 1930 while working in his office.
