Tommy Lucchese was a famous leader in the American Mafia.

He was a key figure in organized crime for over thirty years. He eventually became the boss of the Lucchese crime family. This group was one of the five main families in New York City. Lucchese was known for being a very smart and careful leader. He focused on making money and staying out of the public eye. This helped him stay in power for a long time.

His life changed early because of a hard accident. He was born in Sicily in 1899. His family moved to the United States in 1911. They lived in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. As a teenager, Tommy worked in a machine shop. In 1915, an accident caused him to lose his right thumb and forefinger.

Because of this, a police officer gave him a nickname. He was called "Three-Finger Brown," but Tommy did not like that name.

Tommy rose through the ranks of the criminal world slowly. In the early 1920s, he became an ally of Charlie "Lucky" Luciano. He worked for a leader named Gaetano Reina. Later, he became the underboss for Tommy Gagliano. An underboss is a second-in-command who helps the boss. During this time, the Mafia changed its structure. Instead of one single boss, they created a group called The Commission. This group helped manage the five different crime families in New York.

As a boss, Lucchese controlled many different businesses. He held power over unions in the garment, trucking, and food industries. He also made money through many other ways. He offered loans to businesses that could not get money elsewhere. He even had interests in Manhattan nightclubs and garment shops.

He also worked with other leaders like Santo Trafficante Jr. from Tampa. These alliances helped his family stay strong and wealthy for many years.

Lucchese was also very good at dealing with the law. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1943. He even had a special paper called a Certificate of Good Conduct. This paper helped clear his old arrest records from many years before. The government tried to take his citizenship away in 1952. However, they did not succeed in doing so. He remained a powerful leader until he died in 1967. His life shows how organized crime worked in big cities.
