Richard Kuklinski was a criminal from New Jersey who lived a very hidden life.

He was the leader of a group of thieves who committed burglaries. Most people knew him as a successful businessman living in the suburb of Dumont. However, he was also a killer who committed murders for personal profit. He earned the nickname "the Iceman" because of how he handled his crimes. He would freeze the bodies of his victims to hide the time they died.

Kuklinski had a specific way of doing his crimes. He would lure men to secret meetings by promising them big business deals. Once they arrived, he would kill them and take their money. He also killed people he worked with to keep them from talking to the police. For example, he killed his associate Gary Smith in 1982. He used cyanide to poison Smith and then used a lamp cord to finish the job.

His life began in a very difficult home in Jersey City.

He was born on April 11, 1935, to Anna and Stanley Kuklinski. His father was a violent man who worked on a railroad. Sadly, his father's violence caused the death of Richard's seven-year-old brother, Florian, in 1941. His mother was also often abusive toward him. These hard early years shaped much of his life as an adult.

Kuklinski's criminal path started with smaller crimes in the 1960s. He worked in a film lab in Manhattan. There, he made illegal copies of Disney movies and other films to sell. He later moved into selling illegal tapes, which connected him to organized crime. By the 1980s, his crimes became much more serious. In 1980, he killed George Malliband during a meeting about tapes.

He later killed a pharmacist named Paul Hoffman in 1982.

Law enforcement eventually caught up to him after a long investigation. Police used an 18-month undercover operation to find him. They arrested him in December 1986. In 1988, a court sentenced him to life in prison for four murders. He later confessed to killing an NYPD detective in 2003. He claimed he killed many more people, but experts do not believe him. He died on March 5, 2006.
