She was born in Tolosa in the Basque Autonomous Community. Climbing is a very hard job that takes great skill. She loves to reach the tops of giant mountains. These mountains are called eight-thousanders because they are very high. They are all over 8,000 meters tall. Reaching these summits is a huge goal for many climbers.

To reach these peaks, climbers must follow a long path. Edurne started her big journey many years ago. Her first eight-thousander was Mount Everest on May 23, 2001. After that, she climbed many more mountains one by one. She climbed Lhotse in 2002 and Cho Oyu later that year. In 2003, she reached the tops of K2, Gasherbrum II, and Gasherbrum I. She kept going through the years to reach her goal.

Her climb to the top was not always easy. In 2007, she climbed Broad Peak with Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. On May 1, 2008, she also climbed Dhaulagiri. Later, she climbed Kangchenjunga on May 18, 2009. This climb was very important for her record. It made her the first woman to climb twelve eight-thousanders. She worked very hard to reach these high places.

There was a big debate about who reached the goal first. A Korean climber named Oh Eun-sun also tried to climb the peaks. Some people thought Oh reached the top of Kangchenjunga. However, Edurne and other experts had a different story. Seven Sherpas, including Dawa Ongchu Sherpa, said the climb was not finished. They said bad weather stopped the climb. Later, Oh said she had to stop near the summit. This helped settle the debate about the record.

Edurne finally finished her big quest in 2010. On April 17, she climbed Annapurna. Then she went directly to Shishapangma to finish her goal. On May 17, 2010, she reached the top of Shishapangma. She became the first woman to climb all 14 eight-thousanders. She was also the 21st person in the world to do this. She has also completed the seven summits of the world.
