He is known for swimming in some of the coldest waters on Earth. People often call him the "Sir Edmund Hillary of swimming." This is because he has completed long swims in every ocean in the world. He does not just swim for sport, though. He uses his skill to show how the planet is changing. By swimming in fragile places, he asks the world to notice and care for nature.

His swims are very hard and require great strength. Most of the time, he swims using only a swimsuit, a cap, and goggles. This means he faces freezing temperatures without a wetsuit. One scientist found that Pugh can actually raise his body heat before he even enters the water. This is called "anticipatory thermo-genesis." He believes this happens because of fear, but the scientist thinks it is a response to years of training. In 2006, he even won a gold medal at the World Winter Swimming Championships in Finland. He beat other top swimmers by a very large distance.

Lewis Pugh was born in Plymouth, England, in 1969. His family moved to South Africa when he was ten years old. He studied politics and law at the University of Cape Town. Later, he studied international law at Jesus College, Cambridge. He spent ten years working as a maritime lawyer in London. He also served as a Reservist in the British Special Air Service. These different jobs helped him become a leader for the sea.

He has completed many famous and difficult swims. In 2007, he swam across the North Pole in water that was only -1.7 °C.

In 2010, he swam across Lake Pumori on Mount Everest. This lake is at a very high altitude of 5,300 metres. He did this to show how melting glaciers affect water supplies for millions of people. In 2018, he swam the 528-kilometre English Channel. This swim lasted 49 days and helped people think about protecting the ocean.

His work has changed how countries treat the ocean. In 2013, the United Nations made him the first UN Patron of the Oceans. He also helped create the Ross Sea marine reserve near Antarctica. People even called his work "Speedo Diplomacy" because he used his swimming to help leaders talk. In 2025, he swam around Martha's Vineyard to help protect sharks. He wants everyone to know that sharks are a vital part of the sea. His life shows how one person can use a skill to help the whole world.
