This means she studies living things in the sea and how the water works. She is also a great explorer and a writer. Many people call her "Her Deepness" because she knows so much about the deep sea. She wants to make sure our oceans stay healthy for a long time. Sylvia works hard to protect ocean life from harm.

Sylvia works by exploring deep waters and studying what she finds. She once led a team of women to live in an underwater home. This project was called Tektite II and sat fifty feet below the sea. In 1979, she made a record by diving very deep in a special suit. She did this dive near Oahu without being tied to a ship. She also uses special tools like the Deep Rover research submarine. These tools help her see things that are far below the surface.

Sylvia grew up loving the outdoors with her parents. She was born in 1935 in New Jersey. Later, her family moved to the coast of Florida. She went to many schools to learn about science. She earned a degree from Florida State University in 1955. Then, she earned a doctorate in phycology from Duke University in 1966. Phycology is the study of algae, which are tiny plants in the water. Her work was inspired by a writer named Rachel Carson.

Sylvia has done many important jobs in her career. She was the first woman to be the chief scientist at NOAA. This is a group that looks after our oceans and air. In 1998, National Geographic named her an Explorer at Large. She also started a group called Mission Blue in 2009. This group finds "Hope Spots" to protect around the world. By 2020, Mission Blue had found 122 of these special spots. She wants to protect 30% of the ocean by the year 2030.

You can see how Sylvia's work connects to the food we eat. She chooses to eat a vegetarian diet. This means she eats plants instead of fish. She says this helps keep fish populations healthy. She worries that big ships are taking too many fish from the sea. Sylvia also talks to world leaders about saving the water. She even met President Barack Obama at Midway Atoll. There, she showed him a photo of a new blue fish.
