She works to protect the Earth and its people. Her work focuses on many different areas. She studies the environment and how we grow food. She also fights for what is called food sovereignty. This means people should have control over their own food. She is an expert in many complex topics. These include biotechnology, biodiversity, and how we use technology. People often call her the "Gandhi of grain" because of her work with seeds.

Shiva works in many ways to help the planet. She helps small groups of farmers in many different lands. These places include Africa, Asia, and Latin America. She also works in Ireland, Switzerland, and Austria. One big part of her work is protecting seeds. She believes in something called seed freedom. This means farmers should own the seeds they plant. She fights against patents on living things. A patent is a legal right to an invention. She calls it "biopiracy" when companies try to own plants like neem or basmati rice.

Her journey began with a love for nature.

Her father was a man who worked to protect forests. Her mother was a farmer who loved the natural world. Shiva studied very hard in school. She earned a science degree in 1972 from Panjab University. Later, she moved to Canada to study the philosophy of science. In 1978, she finished her PhD at the University of Western Ontario. Her research focused on the philosophy of physics. She later did more research in Bangalore, India.

Shiva has started many important groups to help the world. In 1982, she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology. In 1991, she created a movement called Navdanya. This name means "Nine Seeds" or "New Gift."

Navdanya helps farmers use organic farming methods. This means growing food without using many harsh chemicals. The group has set up over 40 seed banks across India. In 2004, she also started Bija Vidyapeeth. This is a college for sustainable living in the Doon Valley. It helps people learn how to live in harmony with nature.

Her ideas connect many different parts of our lives. She is a leader in the ecofeminist movement. This movement looks at how we treat women and nature. She believes that farming should involve more women. She also writes many books about these topics. She has written more than 20 books in total. Her book "Making Peace With the Earth" talks about nature and communities.

She wants to make sure the world stays green. She also wants to make sure life is fair for everyone.
