Amartya Sen is a famous economist and philosopher. He studies how people live and how societies work. His work looks at big ideas like justice and fairness. He wants to know how to make life better for everyone. This includes studying poverty and how countries grow. His ideas help leaders understand how to help their people.

Sen studies how choices affect the whole world. He looks at how people get what they need to survive. One big idea is called the capability approach. This means people need more than just money to be free. They also need health and education to make real choices. For example, a person needs a way to get to a voting booth. Without that, the right to vote is hard to use. He also studies why famines happen in some places. He found that famines are often about how food is shared.

As a student, Sen faced a very hard challenge. He was diagnosed with oral cancer while at college. Doctors said he had a small chance of living long. He used radiation treatment and he survived. Later, he went to Trinity College in Cambridge. At age 22, he became a department head at Jadavpur University. This made him the youngest chairman of an economics department. He also studied philosophy to understand moral ideas better.
