His father was a chemistry professor. Amartya went to school in Santiniketan. His school did not use many tests. It focused on many different cultures.

As a young man, Amartya faced a hard time. He had oral cancer. He used treatment to survive. Later, he studied at Cambridge in England. He was the youngest head of an economics department at age 22. He also studied philosophy to learn more about how people think.

Amartya's work helps us understand poverty. He wrote that famines happen for many reasons. It is not just about a lack of food. It is also about how food is shared. He said that people in a democracy can prevent famines.

He also created the idea of "capability." This means people need more than just money. They need the chance to be healthy and go to school. This helps them have real freedom. In 1998, he won the Nobel Prize.
