society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Abhijit Banerjee is an economist. An economist is a person who studies money and how people use it. He wants to help end poverty around the world.

He was born in Mumbai, India. He studied math and economics. Later, he went to Harvard University in the United States. He is now a teacher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which people call MIT.

Banerjee uses special tests to find ways to help people. These are called randomized controlled trials. This is a way to see if a plan really works. For example, he gave bags of food to mothers in India. This helped more children get their medicine. This made the kids healthier.

In 2019, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics. He shared this prize with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer. Esther Duflo is also an economist and is his wife. They work together to find new ways to fight poverty. They also help run a research center called J-PAL. This center uses science to help people in need.
