Grain

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Grain is a small international group. It is a non-profit organization. This means they do not work to make money. Instead, they help small farmers. They also support social movements. These groups fight for food systems. They want food systems to be community-controlled. They also want them to use biodiversity. Biodiversity means having many different kinds of plants and seeds.

How does this group help? They do many different things. First, they do research. This helps them learn about farming. Next, they do advocacy. This means they speak up for farmers. They also do lobbying work. This is when they talk to people in power. They want to change rules for the better. They help farmers keep control of their own food.

This work has a long history. It started in the early 1980s. At that time, activists saw a big problem. They saw a loss of genetic diversity on farms. This means many types of plants were disappearing. At first, they worked with a coalition. This group had mostly European development organizations. Later, their work grew into a larger program. They needed their own way to work.

In 1990, Grain became an independent foundation. It is a legal non-profit group. Its main headquarters is in Barcelona, Spain. In the mid-1990s, the group changed. They started a decentralization process. This brought them closer to the Global South. They worked directly with local partners there. They even let these partners help lead the group. They also moved their staff to different regions.

Grain has won big honors for its work. In 2011, they received the Right Livelihood Award. This award was for their work around the world. They protect the rights of farming communities. They also protect their livelihoods. They show how foreign financial interests buy farmland. These large purchases happen in developing countries. This helps people understand how food systems change.
