society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Grain is a small group that helps small farmers. It is a non-profit group. This means they work to help people, not to make money. Grain helps farmers control their own food systems. They also help protect many types of plants and seeds.

This work started in the early 1980s. At that time, activists saw a problem. They saw that farms were losing many types of plants. This loss is called a loss of genetic diversity. Grain began to do research and speak up for farmers.

In 1990, Grain became its own legal group. Its main office is in Barcelona, Spain. In the mid-1990s, the group changed how it worked. They moved more work to the Global South. This helped them work closely with local partners. They even let these partners help lead the group.

In 2011, Grain won the Right Livelihood Award. They won it for their work around the world. They protect the rights of farming groups. They also show how foreign interests buy large amounts of farmland in developing countries.
